I’m Dr Dan, owner and principal dentist at Smile4U in Hamlyn Heights. When you’re in real dental pain (a knocked-out tooth, a cracked crown, an abscess that won’t quit) you don’t want a rotating roster of dentists. You want someone who can see you today and actually knows what they’re looking at. That’s what a single-chair, owner-run practice gives you.
With over 15 years of experience, I triage, diagnose, and treat you myself, the same day where possible, whether you’re an existing patient or calling us for the first time.
Book online or call during business hours for the fastest response. Outside hours, leave your name and number on our after-hours message line and we’ll get back to you as an urgent priority. Not every “emergency” needs a hospital trip.
If you’re bleeding heavily, have facial swelling affecting your breathing, or have had serious facial trauma, go straight to the ED or call 000.
For everything else, pain, breaks, lost fillings, knocked-out teeth, call us first. Comfortable, efficient pain relief is my priority.
The dental problems we treat urgently
Some things genuinely can’t wait for next week’s appointment. The ones we see most often are:
- A toothache that won’t settle — often a sign of decay, infection, or a crack you can’t see
- A chipped, broken, or cracked tooth, usually after a fall or biting down on something hard
- A knocked-out adult tooth, where acting in the first half hour can decide whether it’s saved
- A crown or filling that’s come loose or fallen out, leaving the tooth exposed
- An abscess or facial swelling, which signals an infection that shouldn’t be left to spread
- Cuts or tears to the gums, lips, cheeks, or tongue
Call us the moment something happens. We’ll talk you through what to do over the phone and do our best to fit you in that day. When you arrive, your dentist’s first job is simply to get you out of pain. From there we work out what’s going on, calm any swelling or bleeding, and stabilise the tooth with whatever it needs — a temporary repair, a permanent fix, or draining an infection.
If a tooth gets knocked out
Try not to panic, and pick the tooth up by the white crown rather than the root. Rinse it gently if it’s dirty, then either ease it back into the socket and bite on a clean cloth, or keep it tucked in your cheek or a cup of milk on the way to us. The first 30 minutes matter most, so don’t wait it out — phone us and start heading in.
Once the urgent part is behind you, we’ll arrange a follow-up to check everything’s healing and talk through anything else the tooth needs to get properly back to full strength.
One note on safety: if you have heavy bleeding that won’t stop, swelling that’s affecting your breathing or swallowing, or a serious injury to your jaw or face, treat it as a medical emergency — call 000 or go to your nearest hospital.
We also know the dentist is the last place some people want to be, especially in a crisis. If that’s you, you’re in good hands. We take things slowly, explain each step, and never rush you — getting you comfortable and back to normal is the whole point.
