No parent wants to take their child to a dental check-up and then be told that they need to have a brace fitted. As this is likely to make your child less than eager to go back in the future! But braces have come a long way in recent years and now, your child may even be able to wear a more discreet brace than the typical orthodontic option.

At Smile4U, our dentist Herne Hill is proud to be able to provide orthodontic care to children and will always discuss all the suitable options with you, to ensure that they get the straighter smiles that they deserve.

With that in mind, what are some of the most common indicators that your child may need to wear a brace? Here, our dentist Herne Hill highlights 5 signs to look out for.

Early loss of baby teeth

This is why baby teeth are so important! They act as markers for the adult teeth when they come through. If your child has had to have multiple baby teeth removed too early due to decay, this can heighten the risk of them developing issues with misalignment when their adult teeth erupt. Our dentist Herne Hill will be able to identify this risk when your child is about 7 years of age and will discuss treatment with you.

Misaligned jaws

Sometimes, this just happens and a child may be born with an upper jaw that is too far forward or, more commonly, a lower jaw that is too far forward. In severe instances, surgery may be needed to move the jaw back into the correct alignment to prevent issues such as temporomandibular joint disorder from developing later in life. If your child has a mild to moderate case of a misaligned jaw, then an orthodontic brace will be the best option for

correcting this.

Spacing between teeth

Spacing between teeth is exceedingly common in children and in some instances, it is to be expected when their adult teeth begin to emerge. If these teeth do not correctly align themselves then this can indicate to our team that a brace may be needed.

Biting issues

Much like the spacing problems between teeth, issues with bites are exceedingly common, with the most well known being an overbite. But there are also incidents of underbites and even crossbites which can result in someone taking a bite out of a sandwich and leaving the filling but getting the bread. Not a very satisfying thing to bite into! If your child has protruding lower or upper teeth, or their teeth are simply at an angle at the front of their mouth (facing forwards or backwards) this can indicate that they will need to have a fitted brace.

Speech issues

Many speech therapists can attest to the fact that children who have misaligned teeth are at a higher risk of developing stammers and lisps. This is because of the way the tongue interacts with the teeth, which is a vital part of creating words and sounds. If your child has had issues with speech since a young age, this can indicate that they may need to wear a brace. So talk to our team for more advice about this.

If you have recently had a dental abscess, chances are you never want to experience anything like that again. For some people, the only option that they are aware of which would minimise the chance of the infection recurring is an oral extraction

But there is another option which for some reason is not as popular, even though the advantages are greater. We are talking of course about endodontics and the root canal.

At Smile 4 U, our dentist Herne Hill has helped many of our patients restore their smiles after an abscess using a root canal. We have seen its advantages first-hand and can assure you that there is nothing to be concerned about.

So, with that in mind, what are some of the advantages that you can have from a root canal that extraction cannot deliver? Our dentist Herne Hill provides the following insight into why a root canal might be preferable to an extraction..

Aesthetics

Firstly, it is worth noting that abscesses commonly occur on the molar teeth in the mouth. So these are usually out of sight, making extraction a more viable option for many. However, suppose you have been unlucky and your abscess has occurred under one of your front teeth; you are less likely to want to have that tooth removed. Our dentist Herne Hill can provide you with a root canal, which will preserve the aesthetics of the tooth provided that it is not too badly decayed. While you may have heard rumours that a root canal will change the shade of your tooth, this is not the case.

Strengthens teeth

A tooth that has succumbed to decay to the level of a dental abscess is going to need a bit of support. And the work that we can provide alongside a root canal can certainly achieve that. We may decide to pair the root canal with either a large filling or a crown, which will strengthen the tooth. It is worth noting that the tooth may also be weakened by the root canal, for which we will offer either a crown, filling or even a veneer to strengthen it.

Prevents cavities

Many patients are unaware that if you have a missing tooth, you are at a higher risk of tooth decay or gum disease. This is due to the gap left by the missing tooth or teeth; it can harbour bacteria, which may be out of reach of a brush.

By avoiding an extraction, our team can help you to maintain the health of your mouth with a root canal. Just be sure to brush and floss as you always do, and of course, to attend biannual check-ups with our team.

Hygienic

When you have had a root canal fitted, there is a high chance that you were suffering from an oral abscess. The easiest way to prevent the infection from spreading is with a root canal. This process removes the infected debris and thus prevents the infection from spreading to the surrounding soft tissue or other teeth. Making it more hygienic than an extraction.

Long lasting

When you have had a root canal fitted, you will need to brush your teeth and floss every day to ensure that the tooth itself stays healthy. You also need to see our team twice a year. If you adhere to this, your root canal will likely last the rest of your life without issue.

If you have children or had younger siblings, you may remember the harrowing experience of watching their teeth come through. When children lose their baby teeth and their adult teeth come through, this uncomfortable experience is somewhat repeated to a lesser extent. However, between the ages of 11 and 19, the majority of people will experience a kind of third teething experience with the eruption of wisdom teeth.

And wisdom teeth can be exceedingly problematic! They are the 5th molars on both the upper and lower jaws, and because they erupt later, they often create a lot of issues with the surrounding teeth. So for many patients, the only viable option is to have them removed.

At Smile 4 U, our dentist Herne Hill has helped many patients who experienced uncomfortable wisdom teeth or secondary complications due to abrupt eruptions or poor positioning. We will always aim to keep all of your teeth in your mouth, but when it comes to wisdom teeth, for most patients, the best option is to have them removed.

So what are some of the signs that you can spot at home that your wisdom teeth are going to cause a bit of a problem? Here, our dentist Herne Hill highlights 5 key symptoms to keep an eye out for.

Discomfort when opening your mouth

Wisdom teeth are located at the back of the mouth, so they are close to the jaw joint. If there is an issue with your wisdom teeth, our dentist Herne Hill predicts that you will have problems opening your mouth, such as when you yawn or eat a large sandwich. This can feel like a pain in the jaw joint or may simply be a restriction on how wide your mouth will open.

Tender gums

One of the main reasons why teeth erupting is so uncomfortable is because the gums become inflamed, making eating food very uncomfortable. So when your wisdom teeth erupt, you can expect there to be some discomfort with your gums. But persistently tender gums, even after the wisdom teeth have erupted, can point to an infection or persistent inflammation. The only way to resolve this in the long term is to have the tooth or teeth extracted so that you can eat without discomfort.

Earaches and headaches

There are nerves at the back of your jaw that link to your ears and head. So if, after your wisdom teeth have erupted, you suffer from more persistent earaches and headaches, this can be a sign that your wisdom teeth are causing trouble and need to be removed! You can attempt to mitigate this with over-the-counter pain relievers, but in the majority of cases, this is a short-term solution and the only viable long-term option is extraction.

Swelling

Swelling in the jaw or facial area can be a sign that your wisdom teeth are impacted, infected or pressing against a neighbouring tooth as they erupt. This is a more urgent situation that will often require a same-day appointment to resolve and diagnose.

Sinus issues

This only occurs with wisdom teeth on the upper jaw. If the roots of your wisdom teeth are pressing against your sinuses, this can create persistent sinus infections. The only long-term way to resolve this is to have the teeth removed.

At Smile 4 U, we provide dental treatment for the whole family. We aim to help you find the time in your busy schedules by offering late night appointments and weekend bookings to enable you to access the treatment you need when it suits you. We provide initial consultations for new patients during which our dentist Herne Hill can examine your teeth, gums and jaw thoroughly to identify any treatment you may need and discuss any concerns that you may have. You may be required to have x-rays to help us determine what is needed for you specifically, and together, we can agree upon a treatment plan that is right for you. For those who have missing teeth, we have a treatment that can provide teeth replacements.

Dental implants

If you haven’t heard of dental implants, then you may be interested to learn that they provide a way of enabling replacement teeth to be securely fitted to your mouth. Replacement teeth can be crowns, bridges or dentures, but they are then fixed to metal screws that can be attached to your jawbone. The result should be replacement teeth that are not going to loosen when you talk and eat.

The benefits of dental implants

Dental implants have a number of benefits, which our dentist Herne Hill here at Smile 4 U can explain in detail when they discuss this treatment with you. The first is the fact that implants can complete your smile, so you will no longer have gaps in it. While this may be aesthetically pleasing for you, it will also protect any remaining natural teeth that you may have from being overexposed to bacteria, which could otherwise lead to further dental complications if left untreated. Another benefit for some patients is that they discover they can speak more clearly as having gaps in their smile can also lead to difficulties with enunciating words properly. We want to hear you properly when you say thanks for the treatment, after all!

Another benefit of dental implants is that you won’t need to alter your diet after the implants have been fitted. You should be able to continue eating normally, which means you won’t need to eat soft foods all the time (unless you want to, of course!). Tomato soup may be healthy and nutritious, but we’re pretty sure you wouldn’t mind a steak well done from time to time! Chomp away with your dental implants!

Once you have had your meal, you will then be able to maintain your implants easily by simply brushing and flossing as normal. If you look after your implants by following your oral hygiene routine and coming to see our dentist Herne Hill for a routine dental checkup, then your implants could last a lifetime!

Come and see us!

If you are interested in getting dental implants or any of our other treatments, book an initial consultation with us, and we will be delighted to welcome you to our friendly clinic. We look forward to discussing any concerns you may have and finding the right treatment plan for you to get you smiling! It’s just what we do at Smile 4 U!

Prevention is the best philosophy

In the wake of the Covid-19 lockdown restriction, many people have been putting off seeking out the aid of their dentist in North Geelong. It is often said that prevention is the best course of treatment when it comes to all things dental, and that patients ought to be able to relax about their oral health, knowing they are doing all they can to keep their teeth as healthy as they can be. That being said, it is also the case that a number of people out there have been refraining from seeking out the help of their dentist, despite needing the care they can provide. As such, whilst prevention is the best philosophy in keeping patient’s teeth healthy, recognising when to seek out the care they need is just as important in maintaining a good level of oral care.

What can a dentist in North Geelong do for me?

As restrictions slowly ease and life is starting to return to some semblance of normal, more and more people are beginning to seek out the much needed help of their dentist in North Geelong. Most trusted, quality providers of dental care are beginning to open their practices up to those who most need it, to provide them with a range of dental solutions and procedures – on a limited basis – to make sure they get the care they need.

By working tirelessly to adapt to the challenges of the pandemic, dental practices in North Geelong aim to be one of the most shielded places that patients can visit outside of their homes. In order to achieve this, certain measures have to be maintained to protect the health of the patient and practitioners. These include wearing face coverings and maintaining social distancing where possible.

Undergoing a comprehensive dental exam

As there are many people in the Victoria area who may not have visited their dental practice for some time throughout recent lockdown measures, it is possible to undergo a comprehensive medical examination from certain dental practices. This examination is undoubtedly the best way for patients to ensure their dental care is up to standard and identify any indicators that further treatment may be required. Examinations of this nature aim to be fully comprehensive and typically include a thorough examination of the patient’s tooth and gum health, as well as the interior of their mouths.

These examinations also typically involve the dentists taking a series of photographs and x-rays of the patient’s dental makeup so they can make further, more extensive examinations. These examinations are the best form of treatment for anyone who is concerned about their overall dental health but is unsure of which areas specifically they require to be treated. By having a dental professional thoroughly examine their oral wellbeing they can identify if any signs of periodontal (gum) disease are evident or if any further dental procedures are necessary. With this information the practitioner and patient can then formulate a custom-made treatment plan which is tailored to meet their specific dental needs, within a calm and controlled environment.

Starting good habits when young is a great way to help ensure that those habits stick and are carried on into adulthood.  This is why we at Smile4U, your local dentist in North Geelong, recommend that you bring your children in to see us for regular check-ups to help demystify dentistry and ensure that your children have good oral health.

Preventing phobias

It is believed that adults with dental phobias either never went to the dentist as a child or they had negative experiences with a dentist while growing up, that resulted in an inherent, but unnecessary, fear of dental procedures. Working with anyone who has a phobia of dentistry can be difficult but it is avoidable; we aim to create an environment that makes our young patients feel secure in laying back and opening wide. We want to make our little patients smile, not cry, which is why each time your children come to see us it will be a positive and affirming experience that helps to foster good relationships with our dentists, so that they may continue to find it a positive experience in adulthood.

Phobias are, unfortunately, transferable to impressionable minds. If you have a fear of dentistry and you make it widely known, you may pass that fear onto your child without meaning to. Children learn from their caregivers, not only the good things but the bad too, so we recommend that you try your best not to speak ill of dentistry at home, but rather help make your children look forward to their visits so that they may break the cycle of fear.

Education

Children see dentists as being in a position of authority, similar to that of their teachers and as all parents know that what a teacher has to say is absolute law, even if you’ve been saying the same thing for years. A favourite dentist in North Geelong, or teacher will be able to drive the message home and in this case, that message is good oral care and healthy eating in order to prevent cavities. We aim to help children understand how to brush their teeth correctly and what foods are on the good list and which are on the naughty list, to help create healthy habits that are good for teeth and gums.

Treatments for children

While children are still young they have yet to lose their baby teeth, but it is imperative that they still create habits which are centred around looking after their teeth and gums, so that when the adult teeth do eventually come through, they will already be used to taking good care of them. We will also be able to monitor the growth of these adult teeth and advise on early orthodontics if necessary to ensure that the teeth and jaw grow straight, and incorrect alignment is corrected so as to avoid any complications in the future.

There are treatments at the dentist in North Geelong that your children may undergo, these are there to help ensure the health of their teeth.

Fissure sealant is a clear sealant that is placed over the top of the teeth to protect them and

fluoride treatment will help protect the enamel of the entire tooth as your child is growing up.

Disclaimer: All treatments carry risks. Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion to ensure that this treatment is right for you.

Make sure your smile is one that you are proud to share by coming in to see your local dentist in North Geelong. At smile4u, we approach your oral health care differently, by understanding what your overall oral health goals and desires are.

By working together with you, we can develop a treatment programme that you understand and are confident with. Whether it is restorative work, preventative care or a range of cosmetic treatments that bring out your truly beautiful smile for all to see, your dentist in North Geelong is here to provide you with fabulous, affordable results.

Many people are not happy with their smile, perhaps because of the way that it looks or feels. Cosmetic treatments can alleviate the concerns and issues that you may have with your smile, allowing you to feel like you can smile more freely.

Many cosmetic treatments that a dentist in North Geelong can offer also have preventative or restorative benefits as well. For example, teeth straightening (braces or aligners) is one of the most well known and popular treatments available, altering the position of your teeth to allow them to be less cramped, to no longer cross over or to remove the gap in between visible front teeth as well.

We also use braces to realign your jaw, a condition that if left untreated can cause severe pain, premature wearing down of your teeth, speech impediments or the inability to chew your food correctly, potentially leading to digestive issues.

For whatever reason it is that you need to wear braces, the results are generally life changing. Not only can your smile look healthier, but as a matter of fact, it will be. Cramped and crooked teeth are difficult to clean, meaning that many of us have more plaque than is necessary around those hard to reach areas.

By straightening teeth out and relaxing some of the pressure you may have where teeth are tightly packed together, you are more able to brush and floss correctly, resulting in an improvement in your oral health.

What other cosmetic treatments also have additional benefits?

Have you heard of porcelain veneers? This is a very popular treatment for those looking for a smile makeover. You are able to completely revamp your smile in only a few appointments, making it one of the quickest and easiest ways to obtain the smile of your dreams.

We essentially cover one or many teeth with a porcelain shell that looks stunning yet natural in your mouth. We can choose the shape, shade and size of the veneer so that it suits your smile perfectly.

By covering problem teeth that are cracked, chipped, broken or simply unsightly, you are also protecting them from further damage, as they are no longer exposed as they once were.

We will discuss with you the advantages of this treatment regarding your personal situation, as well as allow you to consider any potential disadvantages this treatment may have for you. This way, you are able to make an informed decision before deciding to go ahead with any treatment option.

All treatment carries risks. Individual consultation is required with one of our practitioners to ensure that the treatment is right for you.

If you are new to the area or have simply avoided visiting a dentist in North Geelong for some time, then we welcome you to our non-judgemental, professional and compassionate practice. Our team members have the desire and skill to provide you with an ultimate treatment experience, so you can rest assured knowing that your health and wellbeing is placed first when under our care.

We offer a range of different procedures to allow you the smile you aspire to, from preventative to restorative and of course cosmetic therapies. Dental treatments can address a whole range of different needs you may want addressing.  So you will not only be healthier for having a treatment done, but you may feel better about yourself along with a better looking smile.

A dentist in North Geelong will look at your overall health and wellbeing during any initial consultation. Firstly, you will be asked to fill out a health questionnaire whilst waiting for your appointment with your dentist in North Geelong. This questionnaire asks questions about your medical history, your dental history, your lifestyle choices and your diet.

We use this information as the foundation of your care so that we can ask relevant questions further down the track.

As you come in for your examination, we will take the required time to get to know you. This element is extremely important, because a positive relationship between an oral healthcare professional and patient allows you to feel more confident and comfortable in the chair.  This means you will hopefully feel more free to open up and discuss some concerns that you may have regarding your health.

We then begin a physical examination, which checks both the inside and outside of your mouth. We check for any abnormalities, your bite, your general condition, as well as the health of your teeth and gums. We may also choose to take a few scans or X-rays to better determine the health of your teeth and jaw.

Towards the end of your initial appointment, we will discuss the results we have found and go through any treatments that are appropriate for you. Some may be pressing, such as any restorative care that needs to be completed to maintain adequate oral health; some treatments may be more prevention focused because we have identified the early stages of some decay that we would like to keep on top of and monitor, and some may be cosmetic.

Why choose us as your new dental practice?

There are many reasons why you may consider a new dental practice. It may be because you have recently moved for family reasons, to study or for work reasons. You may have had a bad experience with a different oral healthcare professional and are looking for a practice that is more in tune with your needs.

It could be that it has been quite a while since you have had an oral health check-up and are looking to start afresh for your general health and wellbeing.

Whatever the reason, know that the team here will be happy to have you as part of their caring and compassionate family.

Our clinic aims to provide affordable and comfortable dental care to all of our new and pre-registered patients.  Our dental healthcare professionals place our patients needs at the top of our priority list and we aim to accommodate even our busiest patients, which is why we offer after hours and even weekend dental appointments.  Aside from embracing convenience, we try to make our treatments as time effective as possible, making us the first choice for many patients within the local, and surrounding area.

Catering for all of your dental needs

At our Dentist In North Geelong no problem is too large, or too small.  We not only care for the treatment of minor dental problems such as general preventative dental care, we also care for patients suffering from more complex dental conditions.

A service you can trust

Our dental clinic offers HICAPS meaning our patients can have access to easy and affordable dental care.  Our clinic is also a trusted provider of HCF.  We are a member of their “more for teeth program” meaning we can be a part of important dental work.

Our goals

We understand that choosing a dental clinic to receive any form of dentistry, whether it’s simple or complex, can be extremely difficult.  Our clinic strives to make our patients feel at home when receiving treatment with us as we also wish to build long term patient relationships.  We know that dentistry can feel overwhelming, especially for patients who feel anxious within a dental environment, which is why we explain all of our dental care to our patients in simple and understandable terms.

The importance of a visit to your dentist

Many patients may not place a visit to our Dentist In North Geelong at the top of their priority list, this can be due to many external factors.  Our patients may be busy, feel as if it is an inconvenience, or they may feel like their dental health is in order and therefore does not require attention.

We believe our modern dental treatments can help prevent the onset of more serious dental diseases and infections.  Our dental team can detect and treat minor dental problems, the early intervention we promote allows our patients to avoid fillings or even root canal work.

I’m a new patient… How do I start my dental treatment?

If you have never received treatment at our dental clinic before, there are a few simple steps which must be taken before you commence your chosen dental treatment. Located on our modern dental website, we provide a multitude of contact details such as our telephone number, and our email address, however; some of our patients may prefer a quicker alternative.

Get in touch

Many patients may feel as if they are pressed for time, and therefore may prefer to drop us a quick message regarding their future treatment.  Located on our website we give our new patients the chance to fill in a few personal details as well as a selfie of their smile before their dental journey.  This new option has become increasingly popular with nervous patients who wish for a conversation prior to their first consultation at our clinic.

All treatment carries risks. Individual consultation is required with one of our practitioners to ensure that the treatment is right for you.
